Gauge was the unit of measurement used to measure diameter a while back. The relation is that, as the gauge number increases, the thickness of the wire drops by 10 percent. Gauge sizes work in reverse, meaning that higher numbers (like 16 gauge) are thinner than smaller numbers (like a 6 gauge). See example below.
